The Halton Regional Police Service Training Bureau is responsible for the training, educational and developmental needs of its personnel. Its goal is to ensure that all Service members meet or exceed provincially-mandated training requirements and standards.
In 2010, the HRPS completed approximately 47,500 training hours.
The Training Bureau is managed by a Staff Sergeant who oversees the budget, administration, research and development of training and supervision of personnel. A Training Sergeant and Administrative Assistant support the Staff Sergeant.
The Training Sergeant is responsible for coordinating a variety of training strategies used within the HRPS and encourages a continuous learning environment. Specific duties include:
- Administration of legislative updates and training bulletins
- Coordination of on-site training, video training tapes and coach officers
- Recruit training
The Bureau's Administrative Assistant is in charge of:
- Records management
- Registering members for all internal, external, distance learning and/or seminar courses, including recruit training. External courses include those held at the Ontario and Canadian Police Colleges, along with other training facilities.
The Halton Regional Police Service Training Bureau Team includes five full-time Use of Force instructors. These officers are supported by 12 designated safety instructors from the Districts on an as-needed basis.
Each of these uniform members is provincially certified to train fellow police officers in:
- Tactical communications
- Empty hand techniques
- Impact and aerosol weapons
- Judgment training
- Firearms
Use of Force Instructors also:
- Research, develop and deliver training for pistol, conducted energy weapons and shotgun re-qualification
- Offer Immediate Rapid Deployment (IRD) training
- Provide advanced training in building searches and vehicle stops
A Traffic Services Coordinator is assigned to the Training Bureau as well. He/she is responsible for:
- Planning, instructing and evaluating all training pertaining to radar/lidar instruction
- Driver and motorcycle training
- Intoxilizer qualifications
- Coordinating all traffic and motor vehicle enforcement programs with the Region of Halton
- Liaising with outside agencies on matters pertaining to road safety
A Recruit Trainer is responsible for coordinating all recruit training, training for experienced hires and the Coach Officer program.
