Communities On Phone Patrol (COPP) is a joint effort of the Halton Regional Police Service and the citizens of Halton Region.

As the extra eyes and ears of community policing, COPP volunteers observe and report suspicious and/or illegal activities such as vandalism, youth loitering, break and enters, drug and alcohol offences happening in their respective communities to the HRPS.

COPP volunteers work in groups of two or more to patrol assigned areas where there have been high incidents of crime. Volunteers use their own vehicles and are provided with cell phones, if needed.

COPP members do not get directly involved in the situations they encounter. Their job is to observe and notify the Halton Regional Police Service of any occurrence in need of immediate attention, log information on suspicious persons and/or vehicles in their patrol areas, and file duty reports with the Service.

Additional COPP support activities may include locating missing persons, helping stranded motorists and supporting Halton Regional Police Service officers at community events held throughout the year.

To be considered for a volunteer position with COPP, candidates must:
  • Be 19 years of age or older
  • Have good eyesight
  • Pass a background check
  • Driver's licence preferred
All members of COPP receive ongoing training from the Halton Regional Police Service before their first patrol to ensure they have the knowledge and resources available to do the job.

Note: The COPP program requires a minimum two (2) year commitment from individuals. Volunteers are also required to perform a minimum of two (2) shifts per month, totalling approximately eight (8) hours.
