It is estimated that by the year 2026, more than 130,000 people over the age of 65 will reside in Halton Region. The majority of these residents will be living in their own homes or with family.
Although Halton is the safest regional municipality in Canada in which to work and play, some seniors will be the targets and/or victims of crime.
SALT is a volunteer advisory council to police and an action committee. While it is not designed to become involved in police investigations, it is a sounding board for making recommendations to law enforcement agencies.

- Enhance delivery of law enforcement services to seniors
- Increase awareness of services available to older adults, including the scope of crime prevention and victim assistance programs
- Improve quality of life for older adults
- Give appropriate attention to the fears and concerns of seniors; reduce unwarranted fears
- Increase sensitivity of law enforcement officials to the difficulties experienced by older adults
- Increase involvement among the senior population in the planning, development and execution of strategies and programs to help meet their needs
- Encourage greater involvement in implementing solutions from the community
- Improve communications links between communities
Committee meetings are held monthly (except in July and August). SALT volunteers and police representatives also regularly attend community functions to provide seniors and members of the public with crime prevention and safety information.
