Ground Search & Rescue

The Halton Regional Police Service Search Incident Response Team (SIRT) is a community resource that combines police and civilian volunteer staff. It is designed to assume the resonsibility of carrying out a Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) operation beyond the scope of patrol officers.

The police component of SIRT includes Incident Commanders, Search Managers, Logistics Officers, Search Team Leaders and Basic Search Officers.

SIRT is also able to deploy both dismounted and bicycle mounted search teams.

During an extended search operation, the police component of SIRT is enhanced by Volunteer Search Members and Volunteer Logistics Members who provide Halton Region with access to approximately 90 trained search personnel.

Halton Regional Police Service search resources are augmented by members of the Emergency Services Unit - the Tactical Rescue, Canine and Marine Units, as well as by the O.P.P. and neighbouring police services which can include ground, marine and air search assets.
