While the Internet has enriched our lives in many ways, it has also provided child predators with another way to reach potential victims and commit crimes against them.
The Halton Regional Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) consists of three Detective Constables who are supervised by the Detective of ICE. ICE Unit officers work in conjunction with frontline officers,
criminal investigators and
technology crime investigators.
Its goal is to successfully investigate and prosecute online child predators.
Mandate:
The Halton Regional Police Service ICE Unit is primarily responsible for the investigation of offences related to internet exploitation of children. These investigations include, but are not limited to:
- The making, possession, accessing and distribution of child pornography
- Internet luring of a child
Complaints of this nature are received from a variety of sources, including the citizens of Halton Region.
The ICE Unit also receives investigations from local and international agencies.
Proactive Policing Strategy:
The Halton Regional Police Service is committed to proactive strategies to combat Internet Child Exploitation in addition to responding to incidents reported to police.
Child luring investigations are primarily conducted through undercover techniques. These strategies are expected to assist greatly in apprehending more online predators and, more importantly, assist in identifying more victims of child sexual abuse.
